What is Pilates?
Pilates is a complete mind, body, spirit exercise. Pilates was originally called contrology by Joseph H. Pilates, who developed Pilates in the 1920's. Pilates started out as a floor or mat exercise and later evolved into workouts on the Pilates apparatus (reformer, trap table or cadillac, ladder barrel, chair or spine corrector.)
Pilates is a methodology that incorporates all the muscles of the core. This includes the muscles of the rectus abdominis, erector spinae and obliques and more. Pilates utilizes muscles from the neck to the knee on the front, back and side of body. Pilates can strengthen, lengthen, tone, stretch and elongate all core muscles including glutes, hamstrings, quads, abductors, adductors, back extensors, obliques, rectus abdominis, etc.
Pilates is one of few known exercises that can contract, lengthen and stretch a muscle at the same time. One of the major benefits of Pilates is to help alleviate lower back pain. Some of the reasons it so effective is that it helps organize the shoulder girdle, articulates the spine - bringing one to spine mobility, increases pelvic stabilization, increases coordination and balance while improving flexibility.
